Dear Margie,

Received your letter yesterday, was nice to hear from you. Here goes another few lines, so drag out your "specs". Would have typed this one, but I was just too lazy to go over to the orderly room. If I went up to the Headquarters they mite put me to work. Couldn't have that! Not on Sunday anyhow. What do you think?

I finally got my "corporal vating lace" was surprised to get it so soon. At this rate I'll be a General in 3 months. Ha Ha. Say, Cous hope you didn't think I was being nosey by asking so many questions. I was just curious. Just checking up to see that you kept out of mischief. Ha Ha!

Take a short break with our 1 minute survey, simple questions that are an enjoyable distraction.

Yes I smoke. Carmels is my brand. Have smoked them for years. You're lucky that you don't smoke. Don't even start & you'll never have to worry about quitting. It's a bad habit. You say that you will be 18 soon. When is your birthday? So your dad got some bushes from down here in "Ammasillas", did he? They came quite a distance. I haven't been there for quite a while.

Have been waiting to go, but seems like I never can get a chance. We got prisoners in twice last week so we were restricted 3 nights. I hear we have more prisoners coming in tomorrow night, so that measures we will be restricted again. What a life! Will certainly be glad when this is all over. Boy oh boy, if I wont have a "elibhation" Woo! Woo!

Played ball Friday night in town. Our company played the herford five under the lights. 2 played catches as usual. We got beat 10 to 8. I got an "alibi" though. We haven't played 4 - 5 weeks so we were out of practice. We had a lot of fun though. Saturday morning I got up stiff & sore all over. Guess I'm getting old or something. Got paid yesterday. Sure was glad of it. I was so close to broke it wasn't even funny. I drew a little more yesterday than I did last month. Next month I'll get corporal's pay. That's $66.00 per month. Got a letter from Bill. He also made PFC but I manage to keep a jump ahead of him

Have you heard from him yet? I sent him your address & told him to write. Well its dinner time, so I'll close for now. Can't miss chow. I'm a regular chow-hound any more. Tell your folks, I said "Hello". Be good & write when you can.

Your Cousin
Joe

P.S. Notice the address. Its been changed from Herford Institute Camp to Prisoner of War Camp. Joe.

Did you know: The word "inst" was a very commonly used abbreviation for the Latin "instante mense" meaning this month.
