Dear Jackie,
Happy Birthday; I was going to call tonight on your birthday, but didn't have time. It was nearly 10:00 PM before we got done cleaning up. This job of your daddy keeps him pretty busy. Sunday we leave for a week on the rifle range. The Captain says not to take any writing paper as we won't have time to write.
We work from daylight till dark and use candles for light. If mother didn't get you a doll for your birthday, tell her that daddy says you must have one the first time that she goes anywhere. You can tell your mother that you and her have got to pick out ÿ
