Dearest;
You'll hardly know me when you see me again, with my short haircut, deep tan and lost weight. I told you about the haircut and the hot sun down here but I didn't tell you very much about the food. Well first of all darling we eat out of a mess kit which consists of the following: one cup, one collapsible pan, one dish, spoon, knife + fork. Looks something like this:

pan dish cup

This can be made into two pieces and carried in the left hand while marching. Also must be kept extremely clean or you get the G.I. (refer to previous letter)

Blues, which is a very severe case of diarhea. The food is quite good although it gets mixed up quite a bit, but that doesn't matter it all goes in the same stomach anyway. Sunday we had turkey, several vegetables, a salad made of raisins, celery and raw apples and some fruit and drinks. Wednesday we had chicken and today again we had chicken. I've been trying to balance my diet as well as I could. I eat a lot of greens and fruits. So far I really feel very well and tougher every day. Only one thing wrong darling %E2%80%93 If I could only see you or have you with me. So far that seems pretty well impossible. I just had the luck of getting in a tough outfit. B.T.C. #4 (Jack's outfit) is supposed to have been very easy. Out every nite after 6 P.M. and Sat. + Sundays also. So far I haven't seen any freedom at all and they probably have our weekend all fixed for us.

P.S.S. - Give my love to all the folks.

I've heard that living conditions of any kind are very hard to get down here because there are so many officers here. You see, dear, we are about 5 or 6 miles outside of Miami, we are on a restricted post at Miami Beach. Oh well we may only be here about two weeks yet so it wouldn't be worth while coming down. I hope I can stand it that long.

Today we had to sit on the parade grounds first for about one hour in the sun, then we had to stand at a position of parade rest for 1 1/2 hours and watch Colonel Kimberly review about 3000 men, in military parade fashion. It was very thrilling to watch. All the various high officers and Squadrons right down to the flights marched passed

and snapped into a parade salute. The band was there, and what a band that was - very good. I'd rather fly though. Out of the whole group of about 3000 men about 50 passed out because of the sun, dust + heat. Before the parade started they had to stand to attention for quite a long time and some of them just couldn't take it I guess. We were told to pay very close attention because next week we would be in it (Friday). That's going to be lots of fun. Don't worry about me passing out though Darling - you know me better than that.

Darling, I hope you are going to go and visit my parents. Please do this for me will you, they don't have anything left in the whole world but you. Please try to be tolerate and patient with them. If they want to keep some of my clothes as souvenirs, please let them have them without a word of any kind - will you dear? Please do this for me. Be real nice to them. Well that's all for today. Be a very, very good wife and also write.

All my love + kisses
Herb

Did you know: The word "inst" was a very commonly used abbreviation for the Latin "instante mense" meaning this month.
