March 2, 1943

Darling;
I don' know what the trouble is but I just don' get enough letters. We have a mail call twice a day and my percentage is very low for a married man. Dearest, don' you have time to write to me everyday or don' you want to? I know now there' nothing more morale builing than a letter after a hard days work. Today is just about the hardest day I'e ever had in my life. We had very stiff colisthentics this morning, we ran about 2 miles in formation, we drilled and had to hold a brace for 25 minutes. A leuitenant got sore at us. After noon mess, we had another parade. I feel like a board this evening. Don' worry though, I can take it. I'l be

damn glad though, when we get over this. Basic Training - it' really tough.

PRIVATE:
I heard a good one today, one of the men in #604 has his wife down here. He saw her Saturday and Sunday. Monday he passed out and today he had to fall out of formation twice. That' a very good way to "wash out". If you "wash out" here, they send you home to your daft board, isn't that nice? What ever you do darling, read my letters over first, they censor some of the contents. A lot is just between you and I. Here' something more just between you and I. They feed us "Salt Peter" in our food. That' a certain chemical to keep you very unemotional. Tomorrow we have another parade, that' 3 parades straight. This colonel is really parade nuts. I also heard we have another one Saturday. We received a very good compliment to-day after the parade. We've supposed to be the best looking Squadron on the field today. That may mean that we leave sooner, I hope so.

Darling, send your picture down here. Airmail on as quick as possible will you - please.

I went to the Post Exchange tonight and got a birthday card for Marlyn and Pop and also a pair of swimming trunks, khaki ones. I hope to go swimming sometime before I leave. So far I haven't even touched the water yet. I wish I would have known about Marilyn's birthday. I would have bought sometime for her over the weekend. I'll send her a card in time for her birthday and over the weekend I buy some little present for Pops and Marilyn and send them. I'm writing this letter out in the courtyard of the hotel. It's getting a little dark now and it's only 7:45. It seems like mid summer down here but the days are just as short as they were up north. The nights are cold. Dearest if you get time, send me some toll house cookies. I and the boys would really appreciate them.

We'e not allowed to keep anything in our rooms over 24 hours. I don' think anything would last that long around here. Several of the boys received packages from home and boy, these vultures here devoured it in about an hour. You really develop a healty appetite around here. Well dearest I still love you very dearly and miss you very, very much. I hope you miss me, not too much, but still be a very good girl, write and help at home instead of going out so much. Also be careful what kind of company you keep. Gosh aren' I awful darling, I really can' help it darling. You'e all I have in the world and I really want you to be super duper. I can' wait until we'e together again. Bye now, more to-morrow. P.S. - Get ready and start packing. All my love, Herb.

Did you know: The word "inst" was a very commonly used abbreviation for the Latin "instante mense" meaning this month.
