Camp Berry March 24th 1865
Dear Sister Hannah,
I now take my pen-in-hand to let you know that I am well and hope you all are. I have had a sore throat since I've been in camp but it has got well.
I have been detailed to stop in camp to do garrison duty as a musition (musician). When I first got in here I had to do the same as a private did but all I have to do now is to play about an hour during the day. I wanted some things sent in here and I told Fred Bailey to see you and get them. I want two towels a razor

and some other things but I told Fred what I wanted and he will tell you. I suppose my things are all taken care of. If there are not I want them to be after I get acquainted with the Officers. I can get a pass to come home for a day or to (two).
I don't want you to send me any things to eat because I'd rather eat what government gives us. If I should go to eating such victuels it would likely to make me sick. But I tell you it hadn't such a living as you have at home. It is nothing but salt beef, hard bread and cabbe part of the time, boiled ham. One time we did have apple sauce and Bakers bread but that is all we got
