Dear Friend,

Mary your kind and welcomed letter came to hand the 19th and it found me yet alive and enjoying reasonable health.

Well Mary here I am at No. 1 at the midnight hour trying to [illegible] a few lines [4 illegible words] the groans of the wounded and dying. [3 illegible words] by [illegible] at every word [illegible] writing. Oh how sorry I am for them and am trying to alleviate their sufferings as much as I can. The situation is not a very [illegible] one.

but you know the [illegible] must be taken [2 x illegible] by some one. Miss Hall is still with us doing all the good she can and she misses [illegible]. Remember her to my friends when writing.

Well Mary the news came today that Atlanta was taken and burnt. Thousand prisoners and it is [illegible]. At least I hope it is true the Rebellion is [illegible] in a fiery [illegible]. [3 x illegible] and [illegible] never to rise again I hope.

Well Mary I [3 x illegible] letter from [3 x illegible] wrote you a double letter from Uncle John [2 x illegible] your [illegible] has them [2 x illegible] was going to [illegible] until I got home.
