RUTHERFORD WRITERS Galashiels 3rd May 1881 Brownhill Fen duty Dear Sirs, We send herewith (the Inspection?) by Mr Franklin to Capn (Captain) Fairfax and would be obliged if you would give us your opinion on the question "whether Capn (Captain) Fairfax was bound to pay the half year fen duty due at Martinmas 1879. We do not put this question to you as agents for the superior in any way. Messrs Anle Tompkins say they have consulted you and that your opinion was that they were quite right. Your reply with note of charges will ___________ Your truly W.A.& F. Rutherford P.S. We have pencilled the chances (?) which we think bear on the point.
